Vitamin D

Sunshine has been so rare these days that the upcoming sunny weather has us planning for outdoor activities.  Vitamin D is one of the benefits of being outside in the sunshine and is important for our health.  Studies show that it helps us live longer since those with higher blood levels are less likely to succumb to fatal illnesses in addition to having stronger immune systems.  Low levels of this essential vitamin also lead to increased risk of cardiovascular disease because it leaves us vulnerable to the lingering effects of inflammation.  With the high incidence of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in our society, it is essential to have an adequate level of vitamin D since it reduces the chances of dementia and Alzheimer’s from developing.  Those individuals with high levels of this vitamin had healthy brains with all cognitive functioning intact.  Overall, getting some sunshine and vitamin D also did much to improve mood in those who began to take additional supplements.  This is especially important in our sun-deprived area where depression is not so uncommon.  So, armed with your sunscreen and a plan, don’t be afraid to seek out the sun and get your daily dose of vitamin D this weekend.
