As we shed our layers from the dreary winter and spring hails its way slowly into the Pacific Northwest, its only natural to want to eat a bit healthier. However, it’s not so easy -from paleo diets to vegan to vegetarian and all the restrictions in-between, eating healthy isn’t always so simple. Eating right is often fraught with confusing messages about what’s healthy and good for us. A study at St. Michael’s Hospital’s Clinical Nutrition & Risk Factor Modification Center at the University of Toronto showed that weight loss diets often result in weight gain. But why is that? Most of the time people go on diets, they do not vary their foods and if they do, they resume old habits once the diet is over. The true test of eating healthy is not only having a variety of fruits & vegetables, but also in knowing which ones to add that will stop cravings and satisfy hunger. Lentils, chickpeas, and other legumes are both filling and healthy. They can be made in a variety of ways from soups to salads while absorbing the flavor of spices. An added bonus is that they are beneficial in reducing body fat percentage in the body. So as you review diet choices, know that you can’t go wrong if you add some legumes. Have fun with a new recipe and see how many ways you can add them into your diet this week.
